Obituary of Alonzo G. Thomas

Please share a memory of Alonzo to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

A Time to be Born: Alonzo Gregory Thomas, Sr. was born to Lawrence and Levota Thomas on November 14, 1942. He was the last to be born of three. He was born and raised in Camden, New Jersey.

A Time to Learn: Alonzo aka “Lonnie” attended Camden Public School System.

A Time to Love: Lonnie loved spending time fishing, working on cars and collecting antiques. He was introduced to Geraldine Covington in 1976. They courted each other for 19 years then on December 10, 1995, they were wed in holy matrimony. Their combined family consisted of nine children: Six sons and three daughters; Alonzo, Jr., Gregory, Mark, Keith, Rodney, Dawn, Guy, Joy and Dawan. Lonnie dedicated his life to his family. He was everyone’s family mechanic and handyman and all around fixer upper man. In his spare time, he loved to go fishing, collect junk off the side of the road, work on cars, fix and repair broken household items. He also enjoyed watching the Eagles play and having his crew come over and watch the game with him. Alonzo did not attend church every Sunday, however he was always willing to assist when needed serving with his wife in our church/community food pantry. He dedicated his life back to the Lord in 2024.

A Time to Work: Alonzo’s unofficial career should of began as a comedian. He was always telling a funny story or making people laugh with his jokes. At an early age Alonzo’s career began at the Pickle Factory in Camden, New Jersey. After several years he moved on to Moyer-Mitchell where he worked as a truck driver delivering chicken. From there he did construction work. His career in construction ended after having a career ending accident. He was referred to Occupational Training Center by Department of Vocational Rehabilitation in June of 1991. After completing his 90-day work trial, he was offered full-time employment at The Arc of Camden County. He worked with adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities. He worked at The Arc of Camden County for 17 years as a Warehouse Supervisor. Alonzo retired in June of 2008.

A Time to Grieve: On June 14, 2025, God chose to call him home after a long hard fight with illness. His memory will forever be in our hearts. He was preceded in death by his parents: Lawrence and Levota Thomas; one brother, Lawrence Thomas; Mother-in-law; Corine Avery; Sister-in-Law; Maxine Scott; Brother-in-law; Joseph Johnson and Walter Avery.
