Obituary of Eugene Verdell

Eugene Verdell, Sr. was born in Woodbury, New Jersey to the late Cleo M. Verdell, Sr. and Georgie Verdell. He later moved to Camden City and was educated through the Camden City Public School System.

Eugene, called by family and friends, “Gene”, was born on April 10, 1935 and the youngest of five children. All now deceased.

While a teenager, Gene accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior at Faith Holy Temple, 219 Pine Street, Camden, NJ, under the guidance of Elder BT Morris. He later became a Deacon.

In his youth he worked many different jobs. One being Katz Wholesale Foods in Camden, NJ and other various jobs. In his adulthood he worked as a corrections officer at Bayside State Prison in Leesburg, NJ. While at Bayside State Prison, he successfully completed the Criminal Investigation Course conducted by The New Jersey State Police in 1984 and went on to complete the basic course for Prosecutor Detective in 1986. He retired as an Internal Affairs Investigator from the corrections department in 1990.

Gene also loved music and photography. He enjoyed taking photos of his family.

He leaves to mourn, his devoted and beloved wife Estrella; sons – Dwight and wife Yvonne, Fred and wife Jeanette, predeceased Eugene Verdell Jr., Tamal; daughter April and husband James III and Nigel and wife Tracey. Also, a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchild.

He will be dearly missed by those who truly loved him.
