Please share a memory of Alonzo to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Robinson, Alonzo Fuller "Lonnie" the first born of three children, was born on March 28, 1929 to Blanchard W. and Henrietta F. Robinson in Philadelphia, PA. He attended elementary school at 27th and Wharton Streets, Philadelphia, PA and Sunday school at Allen A.M.E. Church. Later, the family moved to Jersey (Atco, Evesham Twp.) where he attended the Marlton School and St. John's U.M. Church Sunday school of Berlin, NJ. He often reminisced of fun filled summers spent with his beloved cousins from the city. Later, he attended high school at the Bordentown Manual Training School, also known as the "Tuskegee of the North." There he pursued all aspects of carpentry. He was also the campus bugler, waking everyone with a round of reveille in the a.m. After his training, with the aid of Dr. Staats, he earned a certificate in carpentry from the State of New Jersey. In 1951, he joined the U.S. Coast Guard and served as the unofficial ship's photographer in addition to his other duties. He spent much time at Norfolk Navy yard and Greenland Outpost. Upon returning home after receiving and Honorable Discharge, he started in the home construction business. He married his childhood sweetheart, Mary Murray and from that union begat two daughters, Celeste and Lois. He worked for several construction companies and after a few years, went into business for himself. Lonnie became well known for fine craftsmanship in home building throughout the South Jersey, Philadelphia and New York areas. Robinson Builders became a well known enterprise and Mary was not only a good mother but secretary and business partner. Much of his workmanship remains intact including the interior work of St. John's U.M. Church of Berlin and the restoration of the fire ravaged Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church of Kresson (Voorhees). He used his gifts to support his family and help other family, friends and neighbors. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Mary; daughters, Celeste and Lois; his sister, Henrietta; sisters-in-law, Barbara, Betty and Loretta; brothers-in-law, William, Paul, Elwood, Alexander and Ernest. He was predeceased by his brother Blanchard and grandson Christopher. He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews and cousins to cherish his memory. Matthew 25:21 "His Lord said unto him, well done thou good and faithful servant. Thou hast been faithful over a few things. I will make the ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of the land. Lovingly submitted, The Family
