the neighborhood is empty without you. I miss seeing you out front in your chair calling out to anyone to
grab a chair and hang out. what great times we had. you have been a wonderful friend with a huge heart of gold. special people come into your life once in a lifetime and I am blessed it was in my lifetime. love you pokie. p.s. you don't have to wear the wings if you don't want to. it's a girls prerogative

Pokey, the mayor of Lombard Street, my raucous, generous, earthy and opinionated friend, did so much to build the community around him. Pokey made sure that everybody knew everybody else, and reinforced the idea that we all have to take care of each other. I will miss Pokey's sassy mouth and his enthusiasm for my cooking (well, nearly anyone's cooking), and I will miss especially his willingness to step up when someone he loved needed help. We find our role models in surprising places (and our cautionary tales).

Pokey was the best neighbor a person could have. He becamed a much loved friend as well. When I moved to Philadelphia 6 years ago, he was my first friend here. He introduced me to other neighbors and great places to eat. He was the most generous person I have ever met. He loaned his car to me Christmas Eve 2006 when my own car wouldn't start. I had only known him 3 months. He was always ready with food, a place to rest and loved to hang out and spend time together. I and later my husband always felt welcome. You never knew who you would meet through Pokey. Very was very democratic in his friendships and loved everyone. Pokey had a great love of live and people and an especially sof spot for our animal friends. He was always ready with a glass of wine for me, and a bowl of water for the pooch. We missed Pokey when he moved from the neighborhood. We will always miss him and smile through our tears when we think of him now.
Love--Kathleen and Juned
