Obituary of Lynette Lorraine Clemons

Lynette Lorraine Clemons was born on December 27, 1932, in Philadelphia, PA to the late Lillian Martin and Vincent Morris. The oldest of two daughters, she and her sister, Deloris Estelle Gaskins, spent their childhood together until at age 12, their father who remarried wanted to share custody of the children and Lynette went to live with him and his wife, Bessie. Lynette graduated from Kensington High School in Philadelphia and in 1955 she moved with them to Cinnaminson, New Jersey. She adored Bessie who became her beloved Other Mother and she maintained a close relationship with her throughout her life. In 1952 at the young age of 19, she married Nabor Charles Davis, III, and from this union, her first daughter, Diana Lynette Davis (Habibah) was born. Lynette was widowed and in 1959 she met and married Glenn C. Clemons. From this union daughter, Laura Lorraine Clemons (Lolly) was born. As a mother and wife, Lynette was, loving, kind, loyal, hardworking, and dedicated to her family and their well-being. She adored her daughters and delighted in their progeny. She was loving and generous to them throughout their lives. Lynette was a Legal Secretary by profession. She started out working at the Law offices of her brother-in-law, Oscar Gaskins, Esq., in Philadelphia and went on to work at several prestigious law firms in New Jersey. For many years until her retirement in 1996, she broke barriers and served as a legal secretary to the Senior Partner at Davis, Reberkenny, and Abramowitz. She was cherished as a loyal, skillful, innovative worker who, in addition to her skills, brought warmth, friendliness, good humor, and a loving spirit to the workplace. Outside work, Lynette was an active lifelong member of LIFE STORY the National Association of Colored Women's Clubs, Northeastern Federation of Women's Clubs and.; the Ebonettes where she served as President and Financial Secretary. She also served as Financial Secretary for the Federation, in the state of New Jersey. With a strong love and faith in Jesus Christ, she joined and was baptized at the Saint Paul Baptist Church, Cinnaminson, New Jersey in 1960. She served faithfully as Church Secretary and Church Clerk under Reverend Dr. Alvin A. Jackson. She sang as a member of the Sanctuary Choir and was a dedicated member of the Church throughout her lifetime. Artistically Lyn was, without exaggeration, an absolute master of the crafts of sewing, crocheting, and knitting. She could see a dress in a clothing store window, go home and make a pattern, get out the sewing machine, and in a few days looked as though she just stepped out of Vogue magazine. She shared her talents and expertise and taught others in private at the neighborhood Community Center. Lynette always gave her time to others when they needed assistance, a helping hand, or encouragement. Generosity and caring were in her DNA. She could be depended upon and her neighbors and friends knew it and loved her for it. She showered her love not only on her family but also on so many other children in their tight-knit community. So many of them, now grown, still call her “Nana” or “Aunt Lynn” and remember her love and inspiration and caring. That love and compassion extended to animals - she was known to help any injured animal that crossed her path and nurse it back to health. With a marvelous sense of humor, she could make you laugh at your troubles and entertain you with anecdotes about her life in an animated and unique way. Her nieces and nephews loved “Aunt Lynn” dearly, and enjoyed spending time with her. She delighted in her grandchildren and considered her time spent with them special. In latter years, she continued to enjoy spending holidays and celebrations with family and friends, watching movies, her favorite programs on TV, listening to her favorite musician Jon Lucien, or just relaxing on the porch in her chair soaking up the sun with her beloved Dog companion “Bandit”, who preceded her in death. Oh, how she loved that dog! As she peacefully departed this life on April 13, 2022, during Holy Week no less, (how auspicious!) her memory will be cherished by her Daughters Habibah Abdul Shaheed and Laura L. Clemons-Skerrett (James, III), her Sister Deloris Gaskins, Nieces and, Nephews, Grandchildren, Great-grandchildren and Great-Great-Grandchildren, her Special Neighborhood Daughters Deborah (Bell) Strain, Jill Y. (Points) Murray and Joy L. Houston-Rhoades Extended Family, a host of Friends and her most recent companion, dog “Harley".
