Obituary of Roy Lee Greene

Please share a memory of Roy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Greene, Roy Lee departed this earthly life on the afternoon of Monday, July 16, 2012 at 2:40pm at Meadowview Nursing Home, Williamstown, New Jersey. Roy knew the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Savior-we can therefore rejoice in his Homegoing. Roy was born on August 15, 1939 in Kinston, North Carolina. He was the fifth child of ten children born to the late Zack and Rhea Esther Greene. Roy was educated in the Kinston, NC school system and graduated from Adkin High School. He accepted Christ as his personal Savior and grew up in the admonition of the Lord. As a child, his mother took him to Sunday School and Church at St. John Freewill Baptist Church in Kinston. Roy worked for Baker's Brother Furniture Store all of his adult life. He was a dedicated employee until his illness. He was on dialysis for over 23 years and was recognized as one of the longest living recipients of dialysis in North Carolina. He gave all honor and glory to God for this blessing. Roy's passion for life was always found in his love of music. He enjoyed all types but had a particular fondness for Gospel and Jazz. His love of music came through his father Zack who played with the legendary Cab Calloway and other musical giants of his day. His father exposed him to the world of music even with Zack's own orchestra. Roy's brother Tyrone had a group "The Uptighters" and he would occasionally sing with them. He did enjoy playing percussions with his favorite being the cowbell. Roy returned to his spiritual roots when he joined St. Rest Holiness Church in Winterville, NC where Rev. Dr. Elliott was his pastor. He was ordained a deacon at St. Rest. He also sang with the Male Chorus and on the Adult Choir. Roy was always recognized for his fashion statement. His suit, shoes and hat was always well coordinated. He was extremely meticulous and took great pride in his appearance. Roy married Annie Ross and to this union two children were born, Quinton and Tanyar. However, Roy embraced and raised as his own Annie's children, Hattie Ross and Johnny Ross. While the marriage did not last, the friendship lasted until Roy's death. Roy later married Laura Lanier and to that union one child was born, Kneta Greene. Also, with love and devotion in his heart, he helped in raising Laura's daughter, Tysheka Lanier (a.k.a. Peaches). In September 2011, with the assistance of his niece, Wanda K. Greene, Roy's son Quinton and daughter Tanyar moved Roy to Sicklerville, NJ to care for him. He soon after joined Christ Care Unit Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Robert F. Hargrove, Sr. where he completed the new member's class and Rev. Hargrove made him an honorary deacon, due to his prior service as a deacon at St. Rest Holiness Church. Roy was preceded in death by his siblings, Larnetta Greene-Dove, Arthur "Buster" Greene, Thaddeus Greene, Barbara Ann Greene and Lamonte Greene. Roy leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Laura Greene; his children, Quinton (Priscilla), Tanyar, Hattie (Calvin), Johnny (Tina), Reginald Edwards, Darnel Edwards, Timothy Roberts and Kneta Greene. His siblings Clyde Greene (Jean), Tyrone Greene (Vivian), Carolyn Jean Greene, Ronald Greene, Cynthia Greene and Valinda Greene Frederick (Cornelius). Also the surviving wife of Author Greene: Mother Ellen Greene: He leaves behind several grandchildren, great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Roy, we loved you but God loved you best.
