Obituary of James W. Peterson

Please share a memory of James to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

James W. Peterson Sr., affectionately known as Jimmy or Pete, was born on April 13, 1943, in South Philadelphia to the late James W. Haile Sr. and Dorothy Peterson. After a lengthy illness, James gained his wings on November 5, 2024.

James was raised in South Philadelphia and received his education in the local schools, attending E.M. Staunton Elementary School, Barret Junior High, and Edward Bok Vocational and Technical High School, where he graduated with full honors.

A dedicated worker throughout his life, James began his career in 1963 at Sealtest Ice Cream, and later joined General Electric (GE). He went on to a distinguished 30-year career with SEPTA, retiring in 1999.

James met Elaine Davis in 1958, and the two were married on October 26,1963. Together, they raised two children, Terri Peterson and James W. Peterson Jr., and shared a loving, supportive marriage until Elaine’s passing in 1997.

Known for his infectious personality and sharp sense of style, James was the life of any gathering. Whether he was breaking bread with family and friends, showing up in a perfectly tailored suit complete with a matching hat and cufflinks, or showing off his swift dance moves, James made sure everyone around him felt special. His love for a good meal, good company, and frequent trips to the casinos and Atlantic City. James also cherished quiet moments at home, often sitting in his favorite chair, tuning into Al Sharpton’s show.

James leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and a deep belief in the importance of family. He always made sure we knew to call him if we needed anything, and he never let us forget how much he loved us…more. His presence will be dearly missed.

James was a devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his children, Terri, James (Jim), and daughter-in-law Serena; PopPop to his grandchildren, Jerrel (Paul), Jazminique, Ariel, and Katelyn; and G-Pop to his great-grandchildren, Kimora, Winter, and Trinity. He also survived by his brother, James W. Haile Jr., brothers-in-law Robert (Butch) Davis and Thomas (Tommy) McEady; sisters-in-law Shirley McEady and Darlene Clowney (James); and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. James also lovingly embraced Destiny as his own and was blessed with a special friend, Sheila Ransom.

James was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Joan Russell, and his brother Major Peterson.
