Obituary of Michael John Scott, Sr.
Please share a memory of Michael to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Michael John Scott, Sr., son of the late Margaret and Carey Scott, was born June 11, 1938 and grew up in the Gray’s Ferry section of South Philadelphia. Mike, as he was known, was the sixth child born of ten children. Mike was baptized at an early age at Butler’s Temple in Philadelphia by the Reverend Butler.
In the mid 1960’s, Mike became smitten and fell in love with a young lady named Barbara Thomas. They married and moved to Parkside, Camden, New Jersey. As a result of that union, three sons were born: Michael John Jr., the late Jeffrey Steven and Shawn Christopher Scott.
Realizing his family had grown and wanting to provide a better future for them, they once more moved, settling down in Mount Laurel, New Jersey. In Mount Laurel, Mike became a faithful and devoted member of Jacobs Chapel A.M.E. Church.
Mike received his initial technical training at Bok Vocational School in Philadelphia. He went on to develop a successful 40+ year career at Radio Corporation of America, RCA. That company eventually merged with General Electric, then finally with Lockheed-Martin. During Mike’s service with these companies, he traveled extensively for work which included Europe and the Pacific Rim. Two of the countries he was particularly fond of were Germany and Saudi Arabia. Even after retirement, Mike’s expertise and service was sought out to work in some of the same countries he had worked in pre-retirement.
Mike was a forever faithful, had a funny dry sense of humor and never ending patience. He was a man in every sense of the word, strong both mentally and physically. He has been the rod of strength through all of the family’s trials.
In recent years, Mike developed some serious and complex health concerns. Ultimately these health issues progressed to a terminal level resulting in his death on May 19, 2015.
Mike leaves to rejoice in his memory a son, Michael John Jr.; a brother, George “Pete” Scott; a grandson, Christopher Darden; a very special friend, Annie Ross; 3 sisters-in-law, Alexis Scott, Claudia Scott and Gwen Clark and 1 brother-in-law, Robert Thomas. Mike was also blessed to have a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
