Obituary
Obituary of Gideon Coe, Jr.
Please share a memory of Gideon to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Gideon Coe was born in Darlington, South Carolina in 1923. He was the 6th of 12 children born to the union of Dora and Gideon Coe, Sr. He later left the South and moved to Philadelphia where he met and married Sarah Coleman, who would precede him in death. To them were born 2 daughters, Patricia and Miriam. They also adopted 2 nieces, Sheila and Cynthia Jones. Gideon and his family later moved to Berlin, New Jersey where he lived until his death.
He was a hard worker for many years for the West Penn Bag and Johns Manville companies. He retired from the latter in 1991. Gideon was also an active member of St. Albans Lodge #35 for many years.
Gideon was a man known for his stern, industrious and no-nonsense ways. He even gave Alzeheimer’s a run for its money. He spent his retirement mostly outdoors gardening and doing other yard work even after being diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. He would remain active, doing whatever his hands found to do, until the last few months of his life.
The physical strength that he displayed throughout his long life was a testament of obeying many of nature’s health laws. “With long life will I satisfy him and shew him my salvation.” Psalm 91:16.
He is survived by 4 daughters: Sheila, Cynthia, Patricia and Miriam; 1 son-in-law: Glen; 3 grandchildren: Kenji, Patrice and Sarah; 4 great grandchildren: Elijah, Josiah, Kahlil and Kaden; 1 brother: Isaiah and 1 sister: Mary; and a host of nieces and nephews.
We, the family, have many fond memories of our father/grandfather and are grateful for those admirable qualities that we saw in him and we strive to practice them in our daily lives. We hope that in some way he was a blessing to you too.
Dad/Grandpop is now sleeping in the grave. It is our hope to reunite with him at the glorious appearing of our great God and Saviour Jesus Christ. Titus 2:13.
