Obituary of George Robert Young
George R. Young, age 93, a resident of Williamstown, N.J. passed away November 14, 2017, at his home. He was born September 30, 1924 in Philadelphia, Pa; the third oldest son of predeceased parents, Dorothy Young and John R. Young.
In 1941 George graduated from West Philadelphia High School in Philadelphia, Pa and continued his collegiate education and obtained a Bachelors of Arts Degree at La Salle College, a Degree of Masters of Education at Temple University, earning certifications as a Teacher in English and Social Studies. His Teaching experience began at Roberts Vaux Junior High School. His experience includes working as a Research Assistant-Research Associate in the Department of Developmental Research in the Office of Research Evaluation in the School District of Philadelphia.
In 1971, he earned his Professional Certification as Secondary Principal and served as Vice Principal and Principal of Wanamaker Junior High and Thomas Middle School. In addition, he was employed with the United States General Post Office, Youth Rehabilitation Center, and the Philadelphia Youth Study Center in Philadelphia. As an educator, he received many awards and accommodations. He served as a Per Diem Principal for the Philadelphia School District after retiring.
According to his records, he served his country in the United States Army during World War II and earned the rank of Second Lieutenant (1952). He also served in the Army Reserves as a Commissioned Officer, Commander of Ordnance and Engineer Units. In addition, he completed courses of instruction at the United States Army Officer Artillery and Engineer Schools. He was a member of the US Army Reserves. During Army infantry training, George volunteered and was selected to attend the Officers Training Program. Upon completion, he was promoted to the rank of First Lieutenant (1955) and participated in the invasion of Europe. He was awarded the following medals: Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with two Bronze Stars. After attending special programs in France during World War II George was fluent in the French Language.
After completing active duty assignments, he returned to civilian life. During this same period, George remained involved with active service responsibilities and continued to serve as an army reservist. He achieved rank of Captain (1959) in the United States Army and retired from these duties.
George was preceded in death by his daughters, Sheila Eberhardt and Sharon Young.
George leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Dr. Bessie LeFra Young; brothers, John Young (Inez), Earl Young; sister, Frieda Ambrose; daughter, Sheryl Chong; grandchildren, Shelley Eberhardt, Uriah Young, Karla Chong; Elliott “Champ” Eberhardt, Jr.; son-in- law, Elliot Eberhardt; and a host of nieces and nephews.
