Obituary of Zachary Allen

Please share a memory of Zachary to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Zachary was born as Zacharias Allen in Mays Landing, NJ on December 12, 1928, to Rev. Dennis E. Allen and Alona Austin-Allen and was one of eight children. Zachary, also known as "Zacky" and "Zack" served in the U.S. Marines during the Korean Conflict from 1948 to 1951 and was stationed in Camp Lejeune, N.C. After an honorable discharge from the military, Zachary returned home to his family in Mays Landing. Before going into the Marines he worked diligently with his father and family to help build the New York Avenue Church of God in Atlantic City, NJ. He later married the love of his life, Sylvia, and they resided in South Egg Harbor, NJ. He worked for several years with Emcee Construction Company and was a member of the New Jersey International Laborer's Union Local 222. Zachary loved weekend barbecues and often hosted card games and entertained st his home with his wife Sylvia. People would come form Delaware, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Maryland and New York to attend his cook-outs and backyard barbecues. Those who knew Zack knew he was a "man's man". He had an enthusiasm for life and could do more as a paraplegic than most of us who can move around independently. He was a great handy man and could fix anything;if he couldn't fix it, he could at least "rig it" for now. LOL! He was very protective of his family. He was a wonderful caregiver to his wife, Sylvia, who was also confined to a wheelchair for a few years of her life. He was a great husband who took care of his wife. He knew the meaning of "through thick and thin" and "till death do us part". He enjoyed spending time with his granddaughter, Dominique and was very proud of her. She too enjoyed spending time with him. Zachary spent more than 40 years in South Egg Harbor before moving to Erial, NJ to live with his daughter, Michelle Allen and granddaughter Dominique Allen - Clarke. He enjoyed Dominique's great cooking and she was an enthusiastic care-giver. Zachary was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Dennis and Alona Allen, wife Sylvia Allen and brothers Albert and Joseph Allen. Left to cherish his memory are his daughter Michelle Allen, Granddaughter Dominique Allen -Clarke, five sisters, Lucille Allen-Leonard, Kathryn Allen-Mangano, Delores Allen, Grace Allen and Elizabeth Allen and a host of relatives and friends. Lovingly submitted, The Family
